Ōtautahi – Police have appealed to students to have fun but be safe this Orientation Week.
Inspector Kelly Larsen, Christchurch prevention manager, says police want parents and caregivers to take note of their advice too, so their young people have the information they need to keep themselves safe.
“Our goal is for students to be safe and feel safe while having a good time. We want students to enjoy everything that is great about attending university.
“We also ask that you respect other people and their property,” she says.
Police say to students:
- Remember to close your windows and lock your doors when you leave your flat
- Remember to take valuables out of your vehicle if you have one and make sure to leave it locked
- If you are planning on drinking alcohol while partying, make sure you; Look after your friends and stick together
- Have a plan for getting home safely at the end of your night. If you’re walking, go in pairs or groups
- Have cash, an Eftpos card, or phone app to pay for transport home or arrange a trusted sober driver to collect you
- Have a place to meet up with your friends if you get separated. Have something substantial to eat before you head out to party
- Drink a glass of water between each alcoholic drink. Make sure your phone is fully charged
- Never leave your drink unattended, or accept drinks that you haven’t personally seen poured, especially from people you don’t know
- Challenge inappropriate comments or actions, and report the people concerned to bar staff, or Police if necessary
Police also have a message for those who may consider taking advantage of vulnerable or intoxicated people – DON’T.
Sexual assault is unacceptable. It is never the victim’s fault and it will not be tolerated.
Police will respond to, and investigate every incident reported to them. Be an awesome mate – keep your friends safe.
There are liquor bans in various places throughout New Zealand’s cities, so students should check they are not consuming alcohol in those areas as it’s a fineable offence.
Students should call 111 in an emergency, or they are observing something illegal or suspicious.
